Windspire at the College of the Albermarle

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

There’s a new wind turbine on the Outer Banks…. the College of the Albermarle used Waldt Renewables to install a Windspire on their Roanoke Island campus. This Windspire will be used to teach students about wind power. Located next to the new professional arts building, students will have access to the wind turbine itself and the data produced from the Windspire in their lab to deepen their understanding of the relationship between weather and clean power generation.

Thank you to the many folks who helped get this wind turbine installed and for the Town of Manteo for being so forward thinking and supportive!

Things we <3 about Renewable Energy — Wind Power

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

First Residential Wind Turbine on the Outer Banks of NC

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Point Harbor, North Carolina

October 11, 2010

Waldt Renewables, a division of Waldt Construction, is pleased to announce the installation of the first residential wind turbine on the Outer Banks. The Windspire™  vertical axis turbine will make its residential Outer Banks debut at the home of Gene and Martha Sutton in Point Harbor on the Currituck Sound.

The sculptural and quiet Windspire turbine will allow Gene and Martha to produce clean, wind energy to offset the demand from their home. Using the near constant wind coming from the Northeast and Southwest depending on the season, the Suttons plan on seeing energy offsets greater than the estimated annual production seen at 12 mph of 2800 kWh per year. That’s more than a third of the average household consumption as documented by the Department of Energy.

For Gene and Martha, both retired but working in second careers, the cost of installing a Windspire was well within reach. They were attracted to lowering their energy bill now and protecting themselves against increasing energy costs. And they had other altruistic reasons. “We felt that it is important to have a visible symbol of our commitment to the future. By installing a renewable energy power source we feel that we are doing our part for the stewardship of this beautiful place where we have chosen to live. There is a greater need here than seeing an immediate financial benefit, “stated Mrs. Sutton.

“We knew that the Windspire was the perfect solution for us. It was approved with ease by Currituck County under their wind ordinance. Our neighbors have participated and approved our installation. There is a great deal of curiosity about wind power and its potential for homeowners on the Outer Banks,” offered Gene Sutton, homeowner.

Waldt Renewables is the eastern North Carolina dealer for the Windspire wind turbine. Waldt Emphasizes Energy Efficiency as Part of Renewable Solutions

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Bridge McDowell, President of Waldt Construction has been at the National Home Builders “Green Building” show in Raleigh this past two days. He reports a set of buzz word being used on the show floor “Extreme Energy Efficiency”.

“This concept is really about making homes energy independent. In lots of instances there are homes that install renewable energy solutions with the idea of generating enough energy to offset their utility demand. But without deploying simple energy efficiency measures to cut the energy demand, renewable energy solutions, like solar or wind cannot be sized appropriately.”

“However, after an intense energy efficiency upgrade that significantly reduces energy consumption, it is possible to lower total energy demand and actually power the house or business with renewable energy solutions,” states Bridge.

At Waldt Construction and Renewables, we’ve had this concept on our radar for a while. Renewable energy solutions are often second following an “energy audit” and some minor repairs that may often cause energy consumption to drop by 20% or more. This makes sizing your solar or wind turbine solution really offer you a chance at energy independence from the utility company.

Waldt wants to work in partnership with you to make your renewable energy solution a success. Using clear and honest communication we will help you find the best options to be energy efficient and then energy maximum benefits from your renewable energy solutions. And the great news is… all of this is available for combined state and federal tax credits of up to 65%.

20 Windspire Wind Turbines Create Renewable Energy at Silicon Valley Headquarters

03.15.2010 – SAN JOSE, Calif. — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Mariah Power (www.mariahpower.com) today announced Adobe has completed the installation of 20 Windspire® wind turbines at its San Jose, Calif., campus, marking the company’s first renewable energy installation. Adobe is a recognized leader for its green building efforts, which have earned it the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest accolade for green practices. Adobe is the first commercial office building to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED®-EB Platinum certification for its San Jose headquarters and the world’s first commercial enterprise to achieve a total of four Platinum certifications under the LEED program.

The new Windspires are located on Adobe’s sixth–floor patio, which doubles as a rooftop garden and recreational area above an office parking garage. The patio sits between Adobe’s three office towers, which create a wind tunnel effect from sustained winds off the Pacific Ocean.
Each Windspire is 30-feet-tall, 4-feet wide, and weighs 650-pounds. The propeller-free, vertical-axis wind turbine can harness wind power in urban, suburban and rural locations. Adobe selected the Windspire for its powerful, sleek, quiet and aesthetically pleasing design.
“With the installation of the Windspires, we’re adding renewable energy to a long list of green measures Adobe has taken to lessen our environmental impact,” said Randall H. Knox, III, senior director, Global Workplace Solutions, Adobe. “We’ll continue to seek innovative green technology solutions to reduce our energy dependence and inspire others to go green.”
“We feel honored to be included in Adobe’s effort to reduce their impact on the environment,” said Walt Borland, president and CEO of Windspire developer Mariah Power. “The presence of these advanced wind turbines in San Jose will give Adobe’s employees and the greater community an opportunity to experience firsthand our ability to leverage the power of the wind.”
Since 2001, Adobe has saved approximately $6.7 million as a result of its energy and sustainability efforts which include projects such as energy-efficient lighting, real-time water meters for landscaping and an intelligent control system to help monitor building efficiencies.

The nation that leads the global economy…

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

In his State of the Union address, President Obama reiterated that “providing incentives for energy-efficiency and clean energy are the right thing to do for our future -– because the nation that leads the clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy.  And America must be that nation.” See it here.

Waldt Renewables is a small business aimed at helping customers in eastern North Carolina  understand how they can leverage existing tax incentives to pay for turnkey renewable energy solutions for their homes and businesses.

We tell our customers that there is an investment when installing any of these solutions. But we believe, as do most of our customers, that renewable energy production is the right direction… from stabilizing energy costs over time to reducing our national economy’s dependence on foreign energy sources.

More importantly, we understand that the more people who are interested in and understand creating clean energy, the more positive an impact on not taxing the environmental future of this region.

Let us hope that our politicians here us on both the state and federal level about maintaining, or better yet increasing our clean energy incentives.

Visualizing Energy Creation Generates Conservation Awareness

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Recently the New York Times published an article about Windspires being installed in front of the City Hall in Copenhagen. While some energy is being generated and offset, the primary goal is to create energy conservation.

One of the people quoted suggests the concept is the same as having city dwellers consider where milk comes from… seeing how energy is produced creates an awareness of how energy is used.

I think this is true. If I see a wind turbine operating, I am far more likely to think about how I use energy. Do I minimize my and my family’s energy usage? Wind turbines, large or small, as energy generators, provide food for thought.
