Last month Waldt Renewables was pleased to install the first part of an innovative Solar lighting solution for the Town of Duck Boardwalk. Stretching from the waterfront shops to the water tower, this timed solution provided low level LED lighting for eight hours using energy collected through five solar panels. Not only was it a beautiful solution, it offered safety to the many users of the boardwalk at night.

During the installation, many of Duck’s residents and visitors stopped to ask questions about the system. Most expressed their
enthusiasm for the Town of Duck’s using a renewable energy source. It was also cost effective for the Town in this waterfront location because of the high cost of using conventional power. Duck had plans to continue this lighting solution all the way down to the Town of Duck park.

Last weekend, Irene’s sound side storm surge resulted from Hurricane Irene passing over the sound pushing all of the water ahead of it. This water returns rapidly when the eye of the storm passes over and the wind shifts direction (see what that meant for us here).

The water reached our solar platform. You can see from the picture here some water borne debris punctured our solar panels. While this wasn’t the best news it was minor compared to the rest of the cleanup that faced the Town of Duck and its merchants and residents. Even more importantly, Outer Bankers are resilient and the progress that they have made in
just one week is impressive.

The solar solution even with the destroyed panels is resilient too… as designed, the system used it battery power to light the LED lights on the existing portions of the boardwalk for five days. The Unirac racking held as did the lights. Right now, we have got the new panels ordered and we will get this solution back on line.

We look forward to continuing to work with the Town of Duck to light the remaining sections of the boardwalk. And now we now we’ve got quite a robust system designed for our customers. For more information, call Waldt Renewables at 252.491.2204 or email us at renewables@waldt.com.

Point Harbor, North Carolina

October 11, 2010

Waldt Renewables, a division of Waldt Construction, is pleased to announce the installation of the first residential wind turbine on the Outer Banks. The Windspire™ vertical axis turbine will make its residential Outer Banks debut at the home of Gene and Martha Sutton in Point Harbor on the Currituck Sound.

The sculptural and quiet Windspire turbine will allow Gene and Martha to produce clean, wind energy to offset the demand from their home. Using the near constant wind coming from the Northeast and Southwest depending on the season, the Suttons plan on seeing energy offsets greater than the estimated annual production seen at 12 mph of 2800 kWh per year. That’s more than a third of the average household consumption as documented by the Department of Energy.

For Gene and Martha, both retired but working in second careers, the cost of installing a Windspire was well within reach. They were attracted to lowering their energy bill now and protecting themselves against increasing energy costs. And they had other altruistic reasons. “We felt that it is important to have a visible symbol of our commitment to the future. By installing a renewable energy power source we feel that we are doing our part for the stewardship of this beautiful place where we have chosen to live. There is a greater need here than seeing an immediate financial benefit, “stated Mrs. Sutton.

“We knew that the Windspire was the perfect solution for us. It was approved with ease by Currituck County under their wind ordinance. Our neighbors have participated and approved our installation. There is a great deal of curiosity about wind power and its potential for homeowners on the Outer Banks,” offered Gene Sutton, homeowner.

Waldt Renewables is the eastern North Carolina dealer for the Windspire wind turbine. Waldt Renewables also provides the latest and most efficient alternative energy options for residential, commercial or institutional projects.
Solar pool heaters for the Outer Banks rental home market that you will be able to get more rentals… renters who book homes in the late spring and early fall often rent solely because they will have access to a heated pool. For most homes, booking one to two additional weeks pays for the entire cost of the system.

Bridge McDowell, President of Waldt Construction has been at the National Home Builders “Green Building” show in Raleigh this past two days. He reports a set of buzz word being used on the show floor “Extreme Energy Efficiency”.

“This concept is really about making homes energy independent. In lots of instances there are homes that install renewable energy solutions with the idea of generating enough energy to offset their utility demand. But without deploying simple energy efficiency measures to cut the energy demand, renewable energy solutions, like solar or wind cannot be sized appropriately.”

“However, after an intense energy efficiency upgrade that significantly reduces energy consumption, it is possible to lower total energy demand and actually power the house or business with renewable energy solutions,” states Bridge.

At Waldt Construction and Renewables, we’ve had this concept on our radar for a while. Renewable energy solutions are often second following an “energy audit” and some minor repairs that may often cause energy consumption to drop by 20% or more. This makes sizing your solar or wind turbine solution really offer you a chance at energy independence from the utility company.

Waldt wants to work in partnership with you to make your renewable energy solution a success. Using clear and honest communication we will help you find the best options to be energy efficient and then energy maximum benefits from your renewable energy solutions. And the great news is… all of this is available for combined state and federal tax credits of up to 65%.

Call us today at 252.491.2204 or email us.

This week in Raleigh the National Association of Homebuilders is holding their “Green Building Conference”. To make sure that Waldt Construction and Renewables is on the cutting edge of Green Building, Bridge McDowell has been at the convention.

One interesting find from Bridge is a solar hot water pretreatment system and tankless hot water assist system. It replaces standard high energy use electric hot water heaters. Using the sun’s energy to keep the water hot most of the time and using the tankless assist for short term high demand times. Bridge’s comment: ” Great idea that has a great rate of return… ”

Keep in mind that solar hot water technology is eligible for all of the unprecendented State and Federal tax credits… up to 65% of the total INSTALLED costs. Renewable energy solar solutions like this one can really make financial sense for the average homeowner.

Waldt Construction and Renewables will be happy to provide a turn key quote for you to take advantage of this type of solar solution.
