New wind resource map released…

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Estimates for wind resources for the lower forty eight states have been revised upwards based on new data presented by a collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and AWS Truwind.

New Wind Resource Map for the US

This data does help here on the Outer Banks to understand the potential for harvesting wind for energy, specifically at heights greater than 80 feet.

10 Million Solar Roof Initiative

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), chairman of the Senate’s green jobs subcommittee introduced legislation with nine cosponsors to encourage the installation of 10 million solar systems on the rooftops of homes and businesses over the next decade.

Senator Sanders cited both a need to have energy independence from foreign energy sources and the possibility of a new robust sector of the green economy for installers and equipment manufacturers as important reasons for submitting this legislation.

Solar systems and solar hot water would be further incentivized by this bill for residential, commercial, institutional and local government.

For more information about this bill visit the Renewable Energy World article here: http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/news/article/2010/02/sen-sanders-introduces-10-million-solar-home-initiative

To contact our North Carolina State Senators in support of this bill, call Senator Richard Burr at (202) 224-3154 or Senator Kay Hagan at (202) 224-6342.

I hope that this legislation goes through. We still need some way of making solar and renewable energy solutions more affordable. CEY

Visualizing Energy Creation Generates Conservation Awareness

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Recently the New York Times published an article about Windspires being installed in front of the City Hall in Copenhagen. While some energy is being generated and offset, the primary goal is to create energy conservation.

One of the people quoted suggests the concept is the same as having city dwellers consider where milk comes from… seeing how energy is produced creates an awareness of how energy is used.

I think this is true. If I see a wind turbine operating, I am far more likely to think about how I use energy. Do I minimize my and my family’s energy usage? Wind turbines, large or small, as energy generators, provide food for thought.

Audit: Dominion Power Users Paid $524M Too Much

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Interesting article in the Virginian Pilot about Dominion’s Virginia Customers paying too much for their electricity. Although they have not initiated an investigation in North Carolina, it makes you questions our reliance on utility companies…

It’s time to generate our own power using renewable energy sources!
